Archie Manning was born on May 19, 1949, in Drew, Mississippi. He was the son of Elizabeth and Elisha Manning and grew up in Drew. He attended Drew High School, where he starred as a quarterback and was named an All-State selection during his senior year. After high school, Manning attended the University of Mississippi, where he was a three-year starter and earned All-SEC honors three times. He was also named an All-American twice and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 1970.
