    Larry Hagman was an American actor, director, and producer best known for his roles as Major Anthony Nelson in the 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie and J.R.     Early Life of Larry Hagman

    Larry Martin Hagman was born on September 21, 1931, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was the son of actor Ben Hagman and his wife Mary Martin, who was a Broadway actress and singer. Hagman’s parents divorced when he was five, and he was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents. He attended Weatherford High School, where he was active in the drama program. He then studied at Bard College in New York, before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin.

    Hagman’s career began in the 1950s, when he appeared in a number of television roles, including a guest spot on I Love Lucy. He then appeared in a number of feature films, including The Group, Ensign Pulver, and Mother, Jugs & Speed. In 1965, Hagman was cast in the role of Major Anthony Nelson on the sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, which ran for five seasons. He then starred in the soap opera Dallas from 1978 to 1991, playing the role of J.R. Ewing. Hagman received numerous awards for his work, including three Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy Award nominations.

    In addition to his acting career, Hagman was an advocate for environmental causes, and was a major donor to the Dallas Theater Center. He also served as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society, and donated his time to a variety of charities. At the time of his death in 2012, Hagman had an estimated net worth of $15 million.
