Pat Smear was born Georg Albert Ruthenberg on August 5, 1959, in West Los Angeles, California. He was raised in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and attended Fairfax High School. Smear began playing guitar in the early 1970s and formed the punk band The Germs in 1977. The band gained notoriety in the Los Angeles punk scene and released their debut album, (GI), in 1979. After the band’s breakup in 1980, Smear joined the touring lineup of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1983.
In 1993, Smear joined Nirvana as a touring guitarist for their In Utero tour. He was officially added to the band’s lineup in 1994 and appeared on their final studio album, MTV Unplugged in New York.
